Renegade Futurism

Pioneers in black speculative fiction gathered at Spelman College today to celebrate the legacy of science fiction novelist Octavia E. Butler at Black to the Future: the Octavia E. Butler Celebration of the Fantastic Arts. This is author/screenwriter Tananarive Due’s culminating event as the 2012-2013 William and Camille Hanks Cosby Chair in the Humanities.

The half-day event included:

  • A lobby art exhibition with work featuring artists John Jennings and Candace Hunter, and samples from ONYXCON from founder Joseph Wheeler III selected to reflect the impact of women characters in science fiction, fantasy, horror, and related genres: Afua Richardson, Eric Wilkerson and others. 
  • A student staged reading
  • A panel of amazing speculative fiction writers: Steven Barnes, Samuel R. Delany, Tananarive Due, Jewelle Gomez, Nalo Hopkinson, Brandon Massey, Nisi Shawl and Sheree Renée Thomas. The panel was live streamed.

Other highlights include a black science fiction short film festival…
